Exploring Dreams and Dilemmas: A Glimpse into “Dunki” – A Review
In “Dunki,” a poignant portrayal of impoverished immigrants from Punjab seeking a better life, a group resorts to memorizing an English test paragraph, inadvertently turning a hopeful scene into a metaphor for Rajkumar Hirani’s storytelling.
While the narrative unfolds with a familiar beat, mirroring Hirani’s signature style seen in previous works, the film’s heartwarming essence remains intact. However, the reliance on the same narrative structure starts to feel like diminishing returns.
In this much-anticipated collaboration between Hirani and Shah Rukh Khan, the film addresses a commendable social cause.
Set against the backdrop of a quaint Punjab town, “Dunki” unfolds the story of four individuals with modest means, fueled by a shared dream of immigrating to London to escape life’s challenges. The narrative takes an unexpected turn when Hardy (Shah Rukh), an ex-armyman, steps in to fulfill their aspirations through a circuitous, illegal route.
The plot gains complexity as Hardy develops a soft corner for Manu (Taapsee Pannu), only to grapple with the realization that her desire for a foreign land eclipses her love for the one who made it possible.
While the theme of illegal immigration is relatively unexplored in Hindi cinema, Punjabi films and real-life accounts have touched upon the perilous journeys of those seeking a better life. However, in “Dunki,” these challenges, presented as a novelty, lack the nuance and poignancy needed to make a lasting impact.
Rajkumar Hirani, known for prioritizing emotional logic over conventional norms, infuses situational humor into the narrative.
In the lighthearted first half, the humor around English and Englishmen feels repetitive, with some jokes, including those around the national anthem, failing to land effectively. The choice of England over the US and Canada, possibly for its colonial connection, raises questions in the context of the current scenario where immigration to the latter is more prevalent and relatable.
While “Dunki” offers moments of emotional resonance, it navigates a terrain where the director’s trademark storytelling brilliance is seen .
Rajkumar Hirani, known for his unique storytelling prowess, ventures into the unexplored territory of illegal immigration in “Dunki.” While the film grapples with certain pitfalls, it manages to strike a chord by shedding light on how immigration policies disproportionately affect the underprivileged. Hirani’s ability to seamlessly weave social commentary into the narrative is evident, emphasizing the deep-rooted patriarchy in small-town India.
The plot unfolds with the revelation of a mother’s occupation as a security guard, a detail that becomes a poignant commentary on societal norms. As the story progresses, the film transitions from comedic set pieces to delve into the broader implications of illegal migration.
The musical backdrop, featuring collaborations like Javed Akhtar and Sonu Nigam in ‘Nikle The Kabhi Hum Ghar Se’ and Varun Grover with Javed Ali in ‘Chal Ve Vatna,’ adds emotional depth to the film.
Shah Rukh Khan, stepping into Hirani’s universe, delivers a compelling performance, particularly in a courtroom sequence where he eloquently prioritizes nation over asylum, making a potent socio-political statement.
The supporting cast, featuring Vicky Kaushal in a staple Hirani character, delivers solid performances, “Dunki” offers moments of humor and reflection, making it a worthwhile watch that manages to both entertain and provoke thought.
